University of Waterloo Indigenous Gathering Circle

This project involves the construction of an Indigenous Gathering Circle for the University of Waterloo. This gathering space is designed to serve as a teaching tool on Indigenous cultures, pedagogies, and ideologies.  It is an open, non-heated structure comprising caisson foundations, wood frame construction o/w glulam beams, timber logs – which traveled 4,000 km from British Columbia –  T&G roof with diamond tile metal finish on the University’s BMH Green site. The site will also feature picnic style seating, stone dust/crushed clay ground covering, plantings of medicinal and cultural significance, new trees, amour stone, sod, lighting, and power connections. Additionally, due to the proximity of the nearby service tunnel crossing the BMH Green structure, the project will include the concrete restoration and re-waterproofing of a portion of the tunnel. There will be grading work and reworking of stormwater lines.
